A bit of a change from prospecting for gold nuggets, chasing giant garnet crystals west of Broken Hill in NSW Australia..

Do they have gem quality cores or just for grinding to sand paper?

Dang! Those are some BIG garnets. But why do they have a semi-metallic sheen to them?

I found a good sized seam while backpacking in Montana USA and my friend couldnt believe that they werent man made. It was pretty funny. Way smaller than the ones you are finding. My girlfriend loved em.

Looks like Ireland’s mine?? If so they would be industrial grade due to the weathering and not suitable for gem stones. Pretty worthless

How did you learn so much about finding garnets, gold, meteorites and everything else you find? Did you go to school and study geology or something,or take some kind of class? I would love to do what you do for a living, but I know next to nothing about finding valueable rocks.
